Living the Luxury Lifestyle (or at least learning about it)

My masters program has a lot of advantages in that we often have planned activities outside the classroom such as our previous trip to Versailles.  This past Friday we had a half day of class and were then split into three groups for three different visits: Gucci, Ralph Lauren, and Hotel Plaza Athenée.  I was very excited to be in the group visiting the hotel, one of the most prestigious in Paris and located on Avenue Montaigne, home to many high fashion stores such as Chanel, Dior, Valentino, and Louis Vuitton.  Although I've been there once for dinner and a few times to the bar, I'd never been inside the actual hotel (and could probably never afford it!).  In the final season of Sex & the City, this is the beautiful Parisian Palace that Carrie stays in when moving to Paris with her Russian Lover Alexander Petrovsky.

Upon arrival half of us were sent home for wearing jeans and the rest of us were ushered into the service entrance, past the pressing and upstairs where we were welcomed with fresh squeezed fruit juices, coffee & tea, and freshly made mini-desserts.   We were given a short history of the hotel (opened in 1911) and then led up to the top floor to visit one of the many luxurious suites: a decent-sized hotel bedroom, decorated art deco style in purple and taupe.  I wasn't that impressed until they opened a door that led to a gorgeous salon larger than my apartment and with a direct view of la tour eiffel.  How much we asked?  Oh, only 15,000 euros per night!  We also visited another beautiful suite decorated in Louis XVI style, as well as the kitchens of the famous three star restaurant Alain Ducasse where we met the head chef and were shown the hand-painted, platinum-rimmed fine china and then visited the actual restaurant with eye-catching chandeliers surrounded by strung-up baccarat crystals.  We then took a look at the very chic and trendy Plaza Athenée bar, the wine cellar, and the newly built Dior Institute.  In total we spent nearly 3 hours visiting all parts of the hotel and learning about different careers within the hotel industry.  Very enlightening.  This week we'll be taking a trip over to Le Musée des Arts Décoratifs to see the Sonia Rykiel exhibition, and coming up we'll visit the Louvre and have a wine tasting.  I could get used to this.....

p.s. i am happy that you are keeping this blog for it helps me live my dream, even if it's vicariously through a stranger's life.
